July 11, 1947 - May 5, 2025
On May 5, 2025, surrounded by his family in the home he loved, Stavros Cranis (Σταύρος Κράνης) passed away peacefully in his 78th year. Born in Athens, he came to Toronto as a young man with a strong mind, sharp will, and the determination to build a life of his own.
As he often explained, fate conspired to send and keep him here, but he never forget where he came from — holding onto his roots through lively conversations & card games in the back of kafeneios, serving tables in Greek restaurants the city over, and sharing stories that blended history, humour, and philosophy
in a way only he could.
Stavros was the loving husband of Marilyn (Mary Jane) Cranis, his partner in life for over 50 years, proud father of Vasilios, Chrisoula, and Michael, and loving grandfather to Luigi, Andreas, and Zoe.
He was predeceased by his parents, Vasilios (Βασίλειος) and Chrisoula (Χρυσούλα), and his sister Athanasia (Αθανασία).
He is lovingly remembered by his brothers Giorgos (Γιώργος) and Fotis (Φώτης), by extended family in Greece and Canada, and by the many friends — especially from The Danforth — who shared memories and laughter with him
over the years.
His presence will be intensely missed, but his spirit, humour, and stories will live on with those who loved him.
And there are plenty of us.
